IMMIGRATION REFORM, CATHOLIC EDUCATION AND CATHOLIC IDENTITY TO BE FOCUS OF DENVER CONFERENCE IN AUGUST
SAN ANTONIO, TX (June 23, 2011) – As the results of the 2010 U.S. Census confirm the major impact that Hispanics – with a population of 50.5 million – now wield, Catholic Latinos from across the country will convene in Denver to analyze how to merge their faith with social responsibility to affect change.
The Catholic Association of Latino Leaders (CALL) is hosting their annual members meeting, entitled “A Catholic Summit on Faith, Citizenship and Public Policy: Our Challenge and Our Responsibility,” on August 12-14, 2011, in Denver at the JW Marriott at Cherry Creek.
Robert Aguirre, CALL’s president and CEO, said anyone who is interested in merging their Catholic faith with their social responsibility is invited. Both members and non-members who attend the summit will gain an understanding of CALL’s voice not just for Catholic social teaching and social justice, but also a voice for the common good of American society. “This is our sixth annual gathering, and the first time that it’s being opened to not only prospective members but to interested parties,” says Aguirre. “The conference is not strictly focused on the Latino community or the Latino good only,” Aguirre adds, “but rather it’s the Latino voice for the common good of our country.”
According to Aguirre, the summit will feature national guest speakers, presenters and panelists who will address current issues facing the Church and nation such as Catholic education, immigration reform, and Catholic identity. Speakers include Most Reverend José H. Gomez – Archbishop of Los Angeles, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput – Archbishop of Denver, and Dr. Mark H. Lopez of the Pew Hispanic Center, among several others.

CALL (Catholic Association of Latino Leaders) is a national organization comprised of lay people dedicated to promoting the common good of the Catholic Church and of the nation. Established on the premise that it is the particular vocation of the laity to transform the world through “faithful citizenship,” CALL members do so by finding new and culturally relevant ways to preserve and promote the values of their faith--especially within the historical context that Hispanics were the first American Catholics. Internally, CALL provides a forum for members to strengthen their faith in community through prayer, education and service. Externally, CALL provides programs, services and events for the benefit of their faith, the community and the country. CALL has chapters established in Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, Miami, Milwaukee, Los Angeles and San Antonio with new groups currently under formation in New York and Washington, DC.
